Chromatic Brass Collective - 2024 New Works Consortium
The first-ever Chromatic Brass Collective New Works Consortium is currently funding two new works for brass by composers Madison Anglin and Katahj Copley. The works will be playable by advanced college groups and professionals and will vary in instrumentation and length. These pieces are intended to enhance the repertoire by historically marginalized composers available for college and professional groups who want to play engaging new music.
Madison Anglin
Madison Anglin (she/her/hers) is a composer for various types of media who likes to stem from textural and rich harmonic palettes. She earned her Master's Degree in Screen Scoring from New York University in 2023. The program has led Madison to score several different projects ranging from animation to investigative documentaries. Madison's collaborations have screened at DOC NYC Festival, The American Black Film Festival, and The Atlanta Film Festival. Interrogated, a documentary she co-scored, was shortlisted for a Student Yugo BAFTA Award. She has collaborated on multiple projects with filmmakers from NYU Tisch, Columbia University, and FIT. Madison is also a recipient of the Television Academy Foundation Internship class of 2023 in the music category. Most recently, Madison has been selected as 1 of 12 composers for the inaugural VIFF Amp Composer Accelerator Program where her music will be recorded and performed live to picture with members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
The artistic scene is not the only experience up her sleeve. Madison has had experience as an event assistant at Sony Music and has worked for Music Business Mogul, Marcie Allen, as a branding and partnership research intern. One of her first industry experiences was being a studio intern to gospel recording artist Fred Hammond. Madison hopes to continue to grow her craft as a composer, conductor, and musical entrepreneur.
Katahj Copley
Carrollton, Georgia native, Katahj Copley (he/him/his) premiered his first work, Spectra, in 2017 and hasn’t stopped composing since. As of 2017, Katahj has written over 100 works, including pieces for chamber ensembles, large ensembles, wind ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions have been performed and commissioned by universities, organizations, and professional ensembles, including the Cavaliers Brass, Carroll Symphony Orchestra, California Band Director Association, Atlanta Wind Symphony, and The President's Own Marine Band. Katahj has also received critical acclaim internationally with pieces being performed in Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, and Australia.
Katahj received two Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of West Georgia in Music Education and Composition in 2021. He is currently studying composition with Omar Thomas at the University of Texas at Austin.
Aside from composing, Katahj is an excited educator who teaches young musicians the joy of discovering music and why music is a phenomenal language.
“Music for me has always been this impactful thing in my life. It can soothe, it can enrage, it can quiet, and it can evoke emotions that are beyond me and this world we live in. I believe that music is the ultimate source of freedom and imagination. The most freedom I have had as a musician was through composing. Composition is like me opening my heart and showing the world my drive, my passion, and my soul.”
